Who we are
Explain a Paper is provided by Digital Tactics Ltd., a private limited company registered in England and Wales, company number 07666910, VAT number GB 118 564 211. Registered office: Ground Floor, 19 New Road, Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1UF. Trading address: 5 Boundary Road, Hove, East Sussex BN3 4EH. You can reach us at sales@explainapaper.com.
What we provide
A short, narrated explainer film of a paper, white paper or report you supply, delivered with captions, a transcript and a poster image. Explain a Paper is opening in stages: until ordering is live on this site, any film is agreed with us by email and these terms apply to it, together with anything we confirm to you in writing.
Each film is AI-facilitated, not AI-generated. A language model helps draft the script, you review and approve it before anything is rendered, the pictures are drawn by our own software, and the narration is a synthetic voice. Human review, in which one of our editors checks the script against the paper and signs it off, is available as an add-on for each film. We disclose the synthetic voice and AI assistance with every film, and you agree not to remove or contradict that disclosure when you publish it.
Your account
Keep your sign-in details secure and tell us promptly if you think someone else has used your account. You are responsible for what is done through it.
The paper you give us
You confirm that you are entitled to have the paper you supply turned into a film and that film published: for example because you or your institution hold the rights, the publisher has given permission, or the paper is under an open licence that allows adaptation (such as CC BY). Some licences, such as CC BY-ND, do not allow adaptations, and some publishers' agreements restrict them; please check before you order. You also confirm that you are the author or are authorised to act for the authors or their institution, and that using any names, logos or brands you ask us to include is permitted.
You are responsible for any claim that arises because this was not true, and you agree to reimburse us for reasonable losses we suffer as a result. We may decline or pause any order we reasonably believe infringes someone's rights or misrepresents who is behind it.
Scripts, approval and iterations
Before a film is rendered, you review and approve its script. Your approval confirms that the script is a fair account of the paper for the audience you chose. We take reasonable care to be accurate, but you know your research best, and the final check is yours.
Each order includes up to three iterations: rounds of your feedback that we act on to revise the film. Feedback should be within the scope of the original order (the same paper, audience and length). Further iterations can be bought individually at the price shown when you order them. A change of paper, audience or format is a new order.
Prices, VAT and payment
Prices are shown before you order. Digital Tactics Ltd. is registered for VAT in the United Kingdom; the VAT that applies to you is calculated at checkout from your billing address and shown before you pay, and you receive a VAT invoice. If you are buying for a business outside the UK, enter your VAT or tax ID at checkout, and where the reverse charge applies no UK VAT is added. Payment is taken by Stripe when you order.
Delivery
Any turnaround we give is an estimate, not a guarantee, and runs from when we have everything we need to start. We will tell you if a film is going to take materially longer than estimated.
Cancellation and refunds
Before work starts, tell us and we will refund you in full. We confirm by email when work begins.
Once work has started, the film is being made to your specification and cannot be reused, so we refund only the part of the work not yet done.
If you are buying as a consumer rather than for a business, you have 14 days from your order to cancel. When you order, you ask us to start straight away. If you cancel within the 14 days, we refund what you paid less a fair amount for the work already done, and once the film has been delivered with your agreement your right to cancel ends. To cancel, email sales@explainapaper.com. Nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights, including your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 if a film is not as described or not made with reasonable care and skill.
Who owns the film
Once you have paid, you may use, copy, publish and share your film, its captions and transcript anywhere and for as long as you like, including commercially, and the script is yours. The drawing system, visual components, characters and templates we use to make films remain ours; the licence to them that is built into your film is permanent, but it does not let you extract and reuse those components separately.
We will not publish your film or use it as a sample of our work without your permission. The paper itself remains the property of its rights holders.
Publishing to YouTube
If you connect a YouTube channel, we publish only the films you ask us to, with the details you have reviewed. You are responsible for your channel and for complying with the YouTube Terms of Service, including its rules on disclosing altered or synthetic content. You can disconnect your channel at any time. See the privacy policy for how we handle your Google account information.
Acceptable use
Do not use Explain a Paper to misrepresent research, to impersonate a researcher, institution or organisation, or to promote a medicine or health product in a way the law does not allow. A film is an explanation of a paper, not professional, medical or financial advice, and should not be presented as such.
If you believe a film made with Explain a Paper misrepresents your research or uses your work or brand without permission, email sales@explainapaper.com. We will look into it promptly and, where appropriate, take the film down from anywhere we published it.
Liability
We make every film with reasonable care and skill. Beyond that, and to the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss arising from how a film is used or relied on, or for lost profit, lost business, or any indirect or consequential loss. Where we are liable, our total liability for an order is limited to the amount you paid for it. Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited, and nothing affects your statutory rights as a consumer.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as the service opens. The version in force when you place an order applies to that order. We will show the date of the latest change at the top of this page.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer living in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you may also bring proceedings in your local courts.
